  You're watching TV and suddenly you see something slid under your door. It looks like an Ikea box. When you pick it up and open it a whole bedroom pops up to demonstrate two things: Ikea flat pack furniture designs are super easy to assemble and they look great.All the items used in the bedroom can be found at Ikea - from the furniture to the bed sheets to the comfy slippers. This one was really a labor of love. It involved hours and hours in Photoshop amongst hundreds of layers, a number of visits to Ikea and lots of photography and retouching. Not to mention the hours down at the press.

No idea who Carlo Mollino is? Well an intriguing Italian designer. A bit dark, very elegant, something of an erotic photographer, independant. I guess much looked at and, no worry,  inimmitable.

DONALD JUDD

I Always liked the work of Donald Judd, but exept for exhibitions or assignments from Dutch intitutions, his work never seemed available to us. Now there is a chance to get Judd. In Eindhoven, at Piet Hein Eek's winkel... His website states:

Sori Yanagi, the Japanese designer famous for his Butterfly Stool made from two identical plywood mouldings, has died in Tokyo aged 96. [Yanagi was born in Tokyo in 1915] His career spanned a period which saw the birth of post-war Japan's industrialisation.

Ikea begint gebruikte items te verkopen op het web

Ikea opent advertentie pleinen voor tweedehands Ikea producten. Het idee wordt alleen in Zweden getest, maar denkt er wel over elders ook derelijke sites te beginnen.

"De tijd zal het leren. Ergens moet je beginnen, in Zweden zijn we de eerste en het voelt erg leuk", zegt Peter Agne Fold, hoofd van de Zweedse winkels Ikea's.

Volgens hem is de nieuwe site gelanceerd in verband met IKEA's inspanningen op milieu-gebied.

"In de eerste plaats, het gaat om milieuverantwoordelijkheid door de manier waarop onze producten worden gebruikt naar een iets langere termijn te tillen. Op deze manier denken we het, voor onze klanten, makkelijker te maken om hun deel van de verantwoordelijkheid voor het milieu te nemen."

Agne Berg schat dat de verkoop van gebruikte producten mettertijd zal toenemen, onafhankelijk van de investering van IKEA op dit gebied. Maar hij ziet geen risico dat nieuwe omzet wordt aangetast.

Ad Square zal geen grote inkomsten bieden aan IKEA. De leden van Ikea Family kunnen er gratis adverteren.

- In Zweden hebben we 2,3 miljoen Familieleden, dus ik denk dat een overgrote meerderheid gratis zal adverteren. We zullen er dus geen geld verdienen, zegt Agne Mountain.

Hij verwerpt de bewering dat de lancering een manier is om de controle over de tweedehands markt te verkrijgen. Evenmin heeft het te maken met een strijd te maken over de koop en verkoopsite; Iloveikea.se (nu Billyandfriends.se), volgens de Ikea baas.

PATTERNED FURNITURE

Drawn onto a 122x244 board like a pattern for a piece of clothes...

Sheets of plywood overprinted with a network of coloured lines are the basis of 2440x1220 Saw, Assemble: an ingeniously simple do-it-yourself furniture range by Swedish designer Pål Rodenius. The lines correspond to a set of shapes that can be cut around with a jigsaw to create seven pieces of basic home furniture.

Rodenius, a graduate of Konstfack, the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, explains: "If you use your jigsaw to follow the green line you get a chair and a table, the red line gives a bench and a shelf and following the blue line gives you a bed, bedside table and clothes stand. To do the complete collection you need three sheets of plywood."

The idea for Rodenius' playful project emerged from studying clothing patterns published in the German magazine Burda. Inspired by their simplicity, he was compelled to adopt the pattern system for furniture production. "The challenge for me has been to make furniture that is as simple as possible to inspire people to build things on their own," says Rodenius. "I developed this project as a starting point for people who want to get into furniture design and carpentry."

With this aim, every aspect of cutting and assembling the pieces has been designed to be child's play. Like a model aeroplane or scaled-up version of something you'd find in a Kinder Egg, the rounded parts slot together without the need for glue or screws. Like Philippe Nigro's cardboard chair and table range for Skitsch (2009), it's a neat study in standard sizes, economical layouts and the possibilities of flatpack. Decorated only with the traces of redundant lines, the finished furniture brings to mind the marks of tailors' chalk on raw fabric, no doubt the graphic influence of the Burda clothes patterns.

2440x1220 Saw, Assemble comes out of an established school of counter-consumerist philosophy. In 1974, Italian designer Enzo Mari (Icon 078) gave away instruction books for his Autoprogettazione, self-design furniture that could be made using pieces of pre-cut pine and a few nails. In 2006, embracing the open-source potential of the internet and desire for sustainable design, Studiomama made a success of its celebrated Pallet Chairs – offering cheap downloadable instructions for creating furniture from reclaimed wood pallets.

Rodenius says: "People are starting to question what they consume and what role designers have these days. And that's a good thing. I think the gesture of doing things yourself makes things more personal. I love to see that happen."

The Parisian architect Stéphane Malka turned an empty room into a gorgeous minimalist landscape by filling it with the humblest of humble objects, the cardboard box.

 

 

 

The Parisian architect Stéphane Malka turned an empty room into a gorgeous minimalist landscape by filling it with the humblest of humble objects, the cardboard box.
The installation, Rue Sans Frontieres (No Limits in the Streets), was made up of hundreds of boxes painted semi-gloss white, then glued together and thrown up around 2,045-square-foot gallery in Moscow. Like a happy Cubist explosion, they littered the walls, the floor, and the ceiling. It's what you might've gotten had you put Picasso and Kengo Kuma in a Mail Boxes Etc. together.

The exhibit was designed for a Moscow arts fair, and unfortunately, it isn't up any more. Check more photos and Malka's artist's statement here.

ANDRéE PUTMAN AMBASSADRICE DU STYLE

André Putman, designer / stylist has finally got her overview in the Paris. More a kind of eighties icon, that reintroduced art-deco into the world in a new and stylish, often black and white, fashion. Known for her big studio lamps, black and white tiled bathrooms and love of Jean Michel Frank succeeded to turn this all into a typical 'Putman Style', now on show in the Hotel De Ville.
