CHEAP HEATING...

This video shows us an ingenious way to heat a whole room for under 15 cents a day or possibly even cheaper if you find cheaper candles.  It’s simple, here’s what you  need:

1. Tealight candles
2. A metal bread pan
3. Two terracotta pots, one smaller than the other
4. A lighter/matches to light the candles

Gaming can be fun. Nu kun je frans leren met een app.
Het heet Duolingo en is behoorlijk geniaal. Het is idee is dat je de basis van een taal leert door iedere dag zo’n 5 tot 10 minuten te oefenen. Het werkt als een game. Je vertaalt van en naar de taal die je wilt leren, je zegt zinnetjes na en beantwoordt multiple choice vragen. Bij een fout antwoord verlies je een hartje (leven) en na vier hartjes moet je de les opnieuw beginnen. Heb je alles gehaald, dan verschijnen er nieuwe lessen.
Ik spreek/schrijf en lees twee talen; Nederlands en Engels. Als we in Frankrijk zijn, moet mijn echtgenote het woord doen, of moet ik hopen op iemand die Engels spreekt. Frans leren is een ooitdroom van mij, maar niet eentje waar ik veel moeite voor wil doen. Ik ga niet op les en koop ook geen online cursus. Maar twee keer vijf minuten oefenen per dag, dat lukt wel! En het werkt! Niet alleen is het leuk genoeg om vol te houden, het geeft ook een gevoel van vervulling als ik weer een lesje heb ‘gehaald’.
En het is gratis! Het businessmodel van Duolingo is slim – als oefening is het bedoeling dat we straks commerciële teksten gaan vertalen – maar of dat gaat werken, daar zijn de critici nog niet over uit. Of je er een complete taal mee kunt leren op conversatieniveau betwijfel ik, maar wat het wél doet, is de basis van een taal erin stampen; grammatica en woordjes. Net als vroeger op school eigenlijk, maar dan veel leuker.
Ik ben benieuwd wat er zou gebeuren met de schoolcijfers als kinderen in de klas twee keer tien minuten op de iPad Duolingo mochten ‘spelen’.
De app is er voor Android en iOS en staat ook online. Op dit moment kun je Spaans, Engels, Frans, Duits, Portugees en Italiaans mee leren. Ideaal voor op la toilette!

VÖLKERSCHLACHT LEIPZIG REVISITED 1813-2013

 

German television is reporting the battle of the nations, 200 years ago, as if it was happening right now. History made visible. Or not, Leipzig area can be rather foggy this time of year. The Völkerschlacht left teh city of Leipzig in a desolated middle of the gathered armies. It was the great defeat of Napoleon, on his way back from the Russian campaign. Russian scorched earth tactics did their work.

Etwa eine halbe Million Soldaten standen sich vor den Toren Leipzigs gegenüber, mehr als 100.000 verloren dabei ihr Leben.
