RETROSPECTION...

TEN THINGS FOR 2010 [in dutch / imported from conceptschool.blogspot.com

To see if there was any truth in it...

2 / Verstedelingen

Stadscultuur is dé cultuur.

Op thema, onderwerp of merk, [life]style, leeftijd, etc.

ABOUT BOOKS [1] SAFRAN FOER / TREE OF CODES

Tree of Codes - A Visually Stunning Read

Praise to this incredible work of art/book.  I have never seen anything quite like this - and feel I'd have to see it in person to truly appreciate it.
Tree of Codes by Jonathan Safran Foer.  The story is literally carved out of another book - I think it is just beautiful.
 Excerpt from Wallpaper:
"Tree of Codes' multi-layered narrative explores 'an enormous last day of life'. Told from the perspective of a boy coming to terms with the death of a parent, it's a haunting story, full of intense imagery. 'My father would walk along like a gardener of nothingness outside of the surface of life,' he tells us. 'He would scatter into fragments."

"'Visual writing' might be at the core of new publishing house, Visual Editions, but it doesn't let its devices become gimmicky or extraneous. In Tree of Codes, the die-cuts are key to the tale. The powerful voice that Safran Foer has exhumed from Schulz's text is made all the poignant by the gaps in between words, which have an extraordinary resonance. They give each phrase space to breath."

"Safran Foer first considered using dictionaries, encyclopaedias and even his own works to construct his story. 'But any of those options would have merely spoken to the process,' he says. 'I was in search of a text whose erasure would somehow be a continuation of its creation."
I expected this book to be in the $50+ range, just based on the amount of work it takes to print such a piece.  However, I was pleasantly surprised to see it for just over $26 on Amazon.  Do you think you would purchase this book?  I found a copy on Bol.com for € 42.

ALL ABOUT FOOD [2] EAT / LOVE

Marije Vogelenzang wrote, "Eat Love A about food, giving an overview of her work from the moment she graduated from the Design Academy in 2000.

Eat Love - Love Eat

Eating is a daily experience that needs special attention. Yes, like love demands. That's the way Marije Vogelzang sees it. Love for the product, love the story behind it, love the people with whom you share it and love for the environment in which you eat. Eating design, in Marije's case means not just look of food. But the WHOLE, all there is in it: the psychological, cultural, sensitive, natural, action-packed, scientific, technical and social aspects of eating should be studied and transformed into food design.

The psychology of eating

In the first chapter Marije Vogelzang
shows, what she understands as the psychology of eating. And she gives impressive examples. During the opening of the exhibition Black Confetti in the Rotterdam Schielandshuis about the Second World War and the impressions of the kids by then (the axis of the bombing came as black confetti falling from the sky) Marije Vogelzang served war snacks, with only the ingredients used during the war. And the beauty was that not only the bad memories of the guests emerged. Despite the poor food of these difficult times, there were still plenty of memories of good times, the food enticed the right conversation piece. Eating together was one of the small pleasures that time and the guests there had pleasant memories.

SNOW BY TOKUIJN YOSHIOKA

Tokujin Yoshioka, the man that designed the fabulous Hermès window display december 2009 [see previous post] did an installation september 2010 [both in Tokyo] called SNOW. Rather appropiate these days... It was a feather snowscape, build up in a 15-metre wide glass space. The dynamic installation was made to move by visitors passing by and was part of the Sensing Nature exhibition at Tokyo's Mori Art Museum.

MOSCHINO'S DALI SALUTE

The New york shop of Moschino showed a Dali inspired windowdisplay this year. Soft furnishing as a salute to the man and his surrealistic art.

It reminded me of a great story I once read;

It was summer, 1939, when Dali was asked to design a window display for New York 5th Avenue, department store, Bonwit Teller. They may have gotten more than they bargained for, but management might have anticipated the interest the window would create. Salvador Dali was at that time, one of the most famous and notorious painters of his day.

The theme of the display was Night and Day. But here no ordinary depiction. A four-poster-bed covered with black sheets, scarred with burn marks, symbolized night. The canopy over the bed was a buffalo; in its mouth was a pigeon dripping blood. The feet of the bed were the four feet of the buffalo. Across the bed, covered in cobwebs and dust, lay a wax mannequin, its head propped up on artificial burning coals.

The depiction of day was even more extraordinary. A bathtub lined with ermine and filled with water
occupied most of the window. A mannequin in a voluminous ball gown was stepping into the tub, her features reflected in a mirror held in front of her by two wax arms that reached up from the floor. Flowers sprouted from every available surface of the display.

Once the display was set up, Dali left the store for the night. But when he returned the next morning, he could not believe his eyes. His precious work had been tampered with by an overzealous employee concerned that the window display did not focus on the ballgown. The bed had been removed, the decor altered, and the wax mannequin stepping into the tub had been repositioned so that her gown could be seen to better effect from the street. Dali felt that the whole display had been ruined.

So enraged was Dali that, without waiting for an explanation, he stormed through the store and forced his way past the store assistants into the window display. In protest he tried to overturn the tub of water, but his foot slipped. In the ensuing melee, Dali and the bathtub crashed through the plate glass window out onto the sidewalk, showering the watching crowd with cold water and splinters of glass. The police were summoned and Dali was arrested on charges of wilful destruction.
Brought into court, Dali was given a suspended sentence.

CULTURAL GUERILLAS

It's been a while...
But "it boggled my mind then" and it made me wonder about the 'state of affairs "today.
So I took a look ...
Monday, November 26, 2007 in
The Guardian published an article on "Cultural Guerillas".
They thought it necessary to repair Paris Pantheon clock. All in extreme secrecy.
It came to light through a lawsuit against Untergunther, for their clandestine restoration.
L'UX is a clandestine Paris-based organization whose goal it is to improve and restore hidden and neglected relics of urban heritage.
Earlier, in 2004, a L'UX related group, "
La Mexicaine De Perforation" was 'caught' on the operation of entertaining a clandestine cinema in a space underneath the Palais de Chaillot on the Place du Trocadero in Paris. The Palais de Chaillot also houses the Musée du Cinema.

Now there's a book, "
La Culture En Clandestins L'UX'". Lazar Kunstmann, spokesman for L'UX and author of the book talks about 25 projects. From the start of the organization, the founding of the cinema, the repair of the Pantheon clock and the process.

25 years clandestine cultural action ... sounds great!

HOW TIME LAPSES

Natalie's parents decided at birth, like any new parents, to take a lot of pictures of their daughter. But where most parents desire to record daily how their child grows up, waines after a few weeks, they kept up with it for ten years, every day.
Finally they put all these pictures in, what they call
"stop motion human growth". This gives a pretty cool overview of Nathalie growing up.

NARCISSUS

This little bewildering piece of film already left quite some of my friends in awe...
It rumbles through your mind...
What do we see?
Is this what we see?
Is it what we want to see?
What does the actor want us to see?
Does he want us to see this?

I [honestly] did not know James Franco, so I did my googling and first of all found quite some articles about him; putting the G question... Is he, is he not? To tell the truth, this film gives an answer. To put it bluntly, he loves himself. We see a boy leaning over in a pond, staring at his reflection and falling in love... The fascination comes from the privilege presented to us, to be able to witness this...

For meeting Narcissus.... Watch: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2010/12/12/magazine/14actors.html#2

EAMES & EAMES X 10 : 10

CONCEPT-TRAVELLING

Think of
H. V. Morton's, Traveller in Rome. One can spend days in the Eternal City following the descriptions of this book. One  story leads to a quest through alleys in the backyard of the Piazza Navona, to finally arrive at the exact spot where the house of [OOK GIJ?] Brutus was, more then 2000 years ago. Then with the help of another book, one can follow his footsteps to the forum, to the spot where Julius Caesar was assassinated
Time travelling.
Morton's book dates from 1957.
Adelheid van Beuningen [1932] wrote Porcia in 2008. Porcia was Brutus wife. It's this book, that takes you through Rome, considering the reasons that gave rise to Brutus act. In Adelheid van Beuningen's historical novel Porcia dies at the end but she now lives on as a historical figure.
Van Beuningen takes the reader back to Porcia's happy marriage, which was dominated by the fight against Brutus' main political rival, Julius Caesar.
Porcia is the straightforward report of the murder and the developments thereafter.
Adelheid van Beuningen is a Dutch writer that lives in England and writes in Dutch.

Next time more on clever time travelling writers...

GERD ARNTZ GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Exhibition: Isotype International Picture Language, Victoria & Albert Museum, London, 2 December 2010-15 May 2011

As a politically engaged graphic artist and designer Gerd Arntz (1900-1988) portrayed the world in wood and linoleum cuts. During the 1920s, he conveyed his vision on social wrongs and the rise of Nazism in Germany in his prints. He did this in such a simple, direct style that anyone - regardless of their education and nationality - was able to understand his images. This prompted the Viennese social scientist Otto Neurath (1882-1945) to ask him to design the symbols for the ’International system Of Typographic Picture Education’ (ISOTYPE). During his long career, Arntz made more than 4000 coherent, powerful and legible symbols and figures. We still see their traces around us on a daily basis: in pictograms featured on objects ranging from traffic signs to gameboys, and in information graphics.
This book displays many Isotypes and explains the system and its context. This overview of Gerd Arntz’s life and work includes a selection of his political prints and other rare visual material that was never published previously. With contributions from Flip Bool, Gert Dumbar, Mieke Gerritzen, Nigel Holmes, Max Kisman, Paul Mijksenaar and Erik Spiekermann.
